United Nations of Reggae -Summerjam 2013

“Kingston, be wise,
Kingston, free up your mind….
Kingston, just be wise,
Kingston, free up the I, yeah” –Protoje

Nothing exposes truth as much as travel to faraway places, especially when multitudes of music lovers unite in heartical passion. After thirty years of faithfully attending Reggae festivals in Jamaica, the United States and Canada, and my 23 years of Reggae radio production, I was certain my knowledge of Reggae music was accurate and all encompassing. My cynical assessment viewed Reggae as a dying genre, increasingly difficult to promote and sustain, and floundering without the much deserved marketing and financial support from its birthplace of Jamaica. NOTHING LIKE THAT!

The seas parted and through divine intervention, Jah provided a much needed apocalypse exposing the international explosion of Reggae in a most delectable and vivacious forum. JAH LIVES!

One of Europe’s most prolific festivals, Summerjam, presents as a full blown Reggae city, self-sustained by the sensuous smell of delectable food, culturally inspired craft and merchandise booths, diverse scenic camping environments and a musical line-up that would make even the most experienced North American Reggae festival green with envy.

Located just outside the picturesque city of Cologne, Germany, Summerjam sits within a lovely forested park alongside the sparkling Fuhlinger Lake. This year’s theme “Free Your Mind” was further enhanced by generous expanses of beautiful resting spots colored with vignettes of red, gold and green festival fans resting, relaxing and vibing by the sensualities of musical massage.

Meanwhile, the monumental Red and Green stages expounded with reggae’s most inspirational, talented and culturally relevant music. Jamaica’s top rated artists performed to a sea of raptured faces. The line-up was further infused with European, African and Australian talent perfectly blending into a non-stop musical synergy of hypnotic and pulsating fun. This year’s stellar performers included Tarrus Riley, Morgan Heritage, Snoop Lion, Gentleman, Patrice, Junior Kelly, Max Romeo, Turbulence, Matishyahu, Broussai, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Romain Virgo, Rocky Duwani, Alborosie, Uwe Banton (not an all-inclusive list) along with the celebrated rising stars of the REGGAE REVIVAL, Protoje & Indiggnation and Chronixx who tranced the crowd via a musical elixir of hypnotic musical perfection.

Not many of us get the chance to travel the globe to attend these epic festivals. Island Stage has the honor of taking you to Summerjam 2013, thanks to Sista Irie providing the following images for those of us who could not be there. Enjoy!!
