COME CELEBRATE OUR 24th ANNUAL SUMMER SOLSTICE & WORLD PEACE GATHERING WITH US THIS WEEKEND!
We are all very excited about the 24th annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival taking place at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Boonville, California this weekend! SNWMF features 3 Days of the Very Best Roots Reggae and World Music. With 2 stages, along with a “Jamaican-style” Late-Night Dancehall, SNWMF is a great way to kick off your summer.
This year’s lineup is now complete and single day tickets are now available as are three-day festival tickets and camping passes. The organizers have once again developed an impressive lineup of performers, many of which signify the true essence of cultural preservation, performing on stages around the globe as ambassadors for their craft.
SNWMF 2017 ~ RUN OF THE SHOW:
The festivities kick off on Friday evening with the SNWMF debut of Toronto-based Exco Levi on the Valley Stage, followed by the return of Italy’s twin riddim-killers Mellow Mood. Next up will be the Boonville debut of reggae’s rising starChronixx. Germany’s Gentleman will close out the Valley Stage music with his only U.S. appearance this year to be followed by some amazing fire dancers.
The Village Stage will be thumping all night long with the Boonville debuts of local band BoonFire, followed by I-taweh and London’s rude, reggae, ska and dub band The Skints. Jamaica’s bionic DJ Ranking Joe will bring down the curtain on the Village Stage Friday night. Meanwhile, things will be jamming in the Dancehall from 8:00pm until the wee hours of the morning, withComanche High Power laying down some serious grooves for your listening pleasure. Anderson Valley will be ‘feeling the bass’ when Paolo Baldini DubFiles takes control of the 1s and 2s along with lots of Special Guests.
The Valley Stage has always featured roots reggae on Saturday, and this year’s roster will be another blockbuster. I-taweh will get things started with an encore set to be followed by Korean roots music by NST & The Soul Sauce. Next up will be a quintet of British performers starting with one of the most exciting and versatile reggae actsGeneral Roots.Christopher Ellis, son of the late-great Alton Ellis will perform before England’s #1 reggae virtuoso Dennis Bovelltakes to the stage. Closing out the British Invasion will be Macka B who has been fusing deep spiritual and political messages into his music for more than 30 years. As evening falls, the pace will liven even further whenAnthony B comes to chant. Every woman will know that “She’s Royal” asTarrus Riley sings backed by Dean Fraser and the Blaksoil Band. And things will be blazing Saturday night when the ‘Fyah Man’ Capletonmakes his Boonville debut at our 24th annual summer solstice gathering.
Saturday’s Village Stage will get started in the morning with The Elovatersout of Boston, followed by the California debut of Marla Brown. For the afternoon performances, we travel down to Argentina for Los Pinguos before taking a journey to Australia for some joyful sounds from conscious roots artist Saritah. Talking Dreads, the brain-child of Jamaican Mystic Roots, is sure to turn many heads. And everyone will be singing “Stop That Train” when the rulers of rocksteady, Keith & Tex come to sing under the redwoods.
More musical fire will be presented in the Dancehall from 8:00-4:30amstarting off with Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi.Next up will be Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry backed by the Subatomic Sound System, to be followed by a rarity – Dennis Bovell spinning selections in the dancehall. New for 2017 Is our late-night ‘Silent Dance’ where music is transmitted onto wireless headphones. Participants can choose to listen to Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi on one track or Heavyweight Sounds meetsEastern Standard Time on a separate track.
Sunday morning’s musical offerings on the Village Stage include the SNWMF debut of Sacramento’s Arden Park Roots and another dose of NST & The Soul Sauce as well as Eastern Standard Sounds, Korea’s premier all Jamaican roots & Culture sound system.One of New York’s premiere bands, Nonstop To Cairo, will then bring their unique blend of ska, hip-hop and funk to be followed by the Bay Area’s high-energy group Soul Ska. Hailing from Haiti, Lakou Mizik is a multigenerational collective of musicians formed in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake united in a mission to honor the healing spirit of their collective culture and communicate a message of pride, strength and hope to their countrymen and the world.
Sunday on the Valley Stage will truly be an ‘international world-wide affair,’ taking you from Sudan courtesy of Sinkane‘s percussion-heavy style of music to England’s Gappy Ranks. From there, you’ll take a voyage down to New Zealand for The Black Seeds, one of the finest bands from kiwi country. As evening approaches, the sojourn returns to Jamaica for the classic sounds of Horace Andy and one of that country’s longest running bands, Third World. The ‘juggling soldier’ Barrington Levy will close out the live musical offerings for 2017… but the music will continue until 2am in the dancehall with another Silent Dance featuring Massive Sound International on one track while Comanche High Power meets Shocks of Sheba will be offered up on the other side.

Our festival is very “family-friendly” with a Kids Zone that features an extensive array of children’s activities, including arts and crafts, bounce houses, a festival parade and family and alter-able camping.
SNWMF 2017 will also feature lots of Performances & Workshops including: Capoeira Agua De Beber. Jambalaya, African Dance, Blocko Elektro, Daring Arts Movement and much, much more.
