Paint Jamaica is the incredible art & social intervention taking over Kingston’s streets, uplifting communities through democratic street art. Our artists create murals in unexpected places and in unexpected ways, with the objective to:
– Transform the visual spaces, shed light and bring more pride to marginalized neighbourhoods. All murals are inspired by the community: we interview and connect with local residents and hear what they have to say. Their words inspire our artists!
– Demonstrate the rich creative energy that exists in Jamaica: the country is overflowing with some incredible talent!
Paint Jamaica kicked off in July 2014 by a French traveler and a group of Jamaican artists. Together, we accomplished two projects in the inner city community of Parade Gardens: 41 Fleet St & Holy Family Primary School. Both initiatives were a first of their kind and entirely volunteer based, integrating people of all backgrounds- including the community, of course. Asides from painting, we also helped organized activities for the community such as BMX, Yoga, Capoeira, an ice cream day for the kids (thank you Kremi!) and a soup drive (thank you Island Grill!)
Today, 41 Fleet St has become the biggest street art space in the Caribbean. Very quickly, the site not only captured the attention of artistes, locals and travelers from all over the world, but it has helped uplift the community of Parade Gardens by bringing more pride and beauty into their streets. People from over 30 countries and of all backgrounds are visiting Fleet St on a weekly basis while connecting with the community and building fruitful friendships with local residents.
This year, we plan to come back with a bang and create something incredible that can continue to fuel positive change!
As we are entirely grass roots with big dreams, we need your help however! In order to make dreams a reality, we need to raise US $5000. This money will help cover costs of all necessary material that makes any project possible! In all our spending we are extremely economical and always buy and support local when we can.
How can you help?
You can donate directly via our crowdfund page. All payments are 100% secure. We have used the Crowdrise platform for all our previous projects with no issues.
You can also organize your own fundraiser, a bake sale, an event or other group initiatives!
