By April 23, 2019Articles

Night Nurse Productions is pleased to let you know about the official formation of the new record label Trojan Jamaica.

This new reggae record label is the love child of Zak Starkey and Sharna “Sshh” Liguz, alongside a partnership with BMG.

The first album will be released this summer, titled Red, Gold, Green and Blue. It’s a compilation featuring such reggae greats as Toots and the Maytals, Mykal Rose, Freddie McGregor, Sly and Robbie, U-Roy, Big Youth and others covering classic blues songs by legends such as Muddy Waters, Big Joe Williams, Robert Johnson, Bo Diddley and more.

Please fulljoy the first single from Red, Gold, Green and Blue which is Mykal Rose with Sly and Robbie doing a wicked version of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins hit “I Put A Spell On You.” Produced by the UK’s Youth (Killing Joke, Bim Sherman, The Orb) musicians on the track include: Robbie Shakespeare (bass), Sly Dunbar (drums), Cyril Neville (drums), Tony Chin (guitar), Zak Starkey (guitar), Ernest Ranglin (guitar solo), Michael Rendall (Hammond).

The single premiered on SIRIUS XM’s The Joint on March 28th, and the accompanying video debuted on on March 27th.

The genesis of Trojan Jamaica came about when Kingsley Cooper, curator of the Peter Tosh Museum in Kingston, saw the killer video of Sshh, Starkey and Liguiz’s musical project, performing “Get Up, Stand Up,”alongside Santa Davis, Tony Chin, Fully Fullwood and Eddie Vedder. He invited them to perform at the opening ceremony of the Museum in October 2016. Their performance, in turn, led to another invitation to the second annual Peter Tosh Tribute in 2017.

From there, as the saying goes, the rest is history. Zak and Sshh set up base in Jamaica, in Ocho Rios, and began recording what will be the first roll outs of the new label later this summer.

We felt so warmly welcomed and at home in the musical community that we stayed and recorded all the music that has become Trojan Jamaica,” says Starkey. “We’re committed to presenting local artistes together with international musicians, who, like us, have been inspired by Roots culture.”
