Well let’s start this off by saying I would never ever have thought there would be a music festival in the town of Blue Lake,Ca.
It was put on by Foreverfoundhumboldt in the beautiful town of Blue Lake, where I actually once lived and played baseball in my youth at this park.
The lineup for this festival was a great mix of Funk,Rap,Hip Hop and Reggae, which included Michael Franti & Spearhead,Don Carlos,The Higher Logic Project, Humboldt’s own Ishe Dube,Object Heavy, the Stallions, Arkaingelle / Seed n Soil, and more. It was a two day event that took place in an old Logging town with town folks that didn’t know what to think when they saw what was happening in their quiet little town.
In the end, I think the town excepted this festival with open arms.
It Started Saturday with an opening ceremony with MC Agnes Potak and the Native American drummers opening with a drum prayer and dancers to follow. Saturday’s turnout was great with the crowd growing to around 1000 to appox 2000 by the time Michael Fanti & Spearhead come on. Franti which is so soulful and family and earthly orientated had the crowd dancing like all the freaky people of the old days of Reggae on the River when he appeared there years ago. He always involves the children in his performances which is always exciting to see the reactions on faces on stage with Franti.
Another great act was Higher Logic Project with front man Dooby Logic, who I am good friends with. They put on one of the best sets that I’ve seen them perform after revamping their band with new musicians.
Sunday started off great with a nice sunny day but was expected to rain by early afternoon. Humboldt’s long time reggae artist Ishe Dube smiled through most of his set. The rain didn’t stop anyone, not even the crowd. Once the rain hit, actually if you live in Humboldt you got to be used to it and get your skankin on anyway. Fans of Legend roots reggae artist Don Carlos hung in there through the rain and enjoyed the positive message through his music rain or shine.
There was a 360 degree projection dome also and great food, arts and crafts vendors along with a GREAT kids zone with a special apperance by the Seseme Street Characters.
